Looking forward to his new film The Tall Man later this year. Nice review!Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3565243314006487322.post-41974666541398322972011-09-28T11:57:12.927-07:002011-09-28T11:57:12.927-07:00@The Film Connoisseur: Yeah Got to love the French...@The Film Connoisseur: Yeah Got to love the French Neo-Horror revolution, which has seen the likes of "Switchblade Romance" and "Frontier(s)" blowing my little mind in the last few years. I loved your exploration of the religious aspects of the film in your review, which made me see it differently again.

I love all the debates that the film has caused since it's release not only in regards to the violence and imagery, but also the theme's it explores and what different parts represent.Elwood Joneshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09661750406352159996noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3565243314006487322.post-35942060225011718392011-09-28T06:24:30.824-07:002011-09-28T06:24:30.824-07:00This was one of the best horror films I'd seen...This was one of the best horror films I'd seen in a while, I wrote up a smoking hot review for it. I loved how it explored the evils of religion and it's obsession with life after death.Franco Macabrohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10994905312221715861noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3565243314006487322.post-23065416323590169372011-09-27T07:16:21.392-07:002011-09-27T07:16:21.392-07:00@Jenn: Honestly since reading your comments regard...@Jenn: Honestly since reading your comments regarding the visions I'm now actually leaning more towards them being more Clive Barker esq, who seems to have quite a few nods throughout, with the Flaying scene being what first brought him to find, seeing how much he loves a skinless corpse.

The old woman for some reason reminds me so much of Zelda Rubinstein (the iconic psychic from "Poltergeist"). I think the line is meant to symbolise her realisation of the lines crossed and what they have done in order to find thier answer and because of this that as thier punishment for thier crimes they must be left without an answer....somthing along those lines I'm guessing. As I said in the review Laugier doesn't exactly leave any definate answers so alot is left to viewer interpritation.

@Hellford667: I have seen "Mum & Dad" and honestly thought it was garbage and further proof of the decline of British cinema, I mean honestly when is the last time that us Brits, produced a film really worth discussing?? Like "A Serbian Film" I felt that this film had been made with some thought, rather than basically going for sheer shock factor and like "A Serbian Film", this film might not fully hit it's original target it still refreshing to see how effective these powerful kind of image can be.Elwood Joneshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09661750406352159996noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3565243314006487322.post-87051401310025857332011-09-26T22:03:17.767-07:002011-09-26T22:03:17.767-07:00All very nicely put, Elwood, overall, and I think ...All very nicely put, Elwood, overall, and I think you're exactly right on most fronts, considering how difficult this is to sit through, especially the latter half.

However, I don't know if I would classify the visions haunting Lucie as 'Lovecraftian' as you do here. To me, they have a much more J-horror type of vibe, albeit with a much nastier streak, not the tentacled beasties populating the nightmares of of old HP. But then again, it's been a moment since I've last watched MARTYRS, since purchasing a copy when it came out.

But really, what begs the question here? That creepy bitch before she blows her brains out, she says, what? 'Go in doubt.' WTF do you make of that?Jennhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13299640716799276127noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3565243314006487322.post-44699223392599348722011-09-26T18:31:27.273-07:002011-09-26T18:31:27.273-07:00ok, this deserves a comment...i saw this a few yea...ok, this deserves a comment...i saw this a few years ago, and only once...but i remember that it was a tough one, and certainly not so easy to watch...i believe im beyond the need to watch extreme gore films, or simply violence for that matter, but with all the crap the movie industry throws at you, it certainly is "refreshing" to watch a movie like this, cuz it makes you think...not sure about what, but it makes you think.
Did you ever see MUM & DAD...another one of these sick movies,lol.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
