Not that I hate the way the film version turned out, as both book and film are classics in their own ways and nice to see that Frank Oz kept the darker tone for "Return to Oz" which opens with Dorothy declared made and undergoing electroshock treatment!

I really need to sit down at some point and write the follow up to this article, especially as I didn't cover films like "Watership Down" which again for a film about bunnies is really quite disturbed with it's fields of blood and certain rabid looking characters or "Gremlins" which while not a family film per say considering how I was released as a horror comedy, still ending up being shown to most kids who no doubt had their little minds blown by the kitchen scene or Spike's climatic meltdown.Elwood Joneshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09661750406352159996noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3565243314006487322.post-91894752524128892862012-10-31T22:21:50.266-07:002012-10-31T22:21:50.266-07:00I agree, just look at any fairytale from Red Ridin...I agree, just look at any fairytale from Red Riding-hood or any tale in One Thousand and One Nights -- I recently read some of them and was shocked so many of them ended up with limbs (or heads!!) being chopped off xD

The other day my cousin asked me whether Hocus Pocus was good for 5 and 6 year olds. xD I was like... Perhaps we weren't so censored as a society as we seem to be right now, were minor things are blown so out of proportion. At the same time we have this horrible Disney school of writing now were everything is painted so day-glow and saturnine sweet. It's also amusing that so many books and stories which people often assume to be clean cut fun, are actually pretty dark...just look at "The Wizard of Oz" as a prime example.

Elwood Joneshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09661750406352159996noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3565243314006487322.post-53162910436270071692012-10-31T12:50:31.061-07:002012-10-31T12:50:31.061-07:00Great selection!!!

But could you imagine that before re-watching WFRR as a grown up, I didn't remember the warehouse scene? I remembered the green chemical, but I guess my parents turned off the movie before it reached that part??? xD Or maybe it was so shocking, my brain just blocked it. xDamyhttp://www.yam-mag.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3565243314006487322.post-57092946636723927832012-10-05T13:12:04.328-07:002012-10-05T13:12:04.328-07:00Thanks.

Can't say it stopped me watching it over and over as a kid, in fact following a claim from my Grandad that I could probably write the script, I'd seen it that many times I did end up writing my own junior novelization of the film, which he illustrated for me in the columns :)Elwood Joneshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09661750406352159996noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3565243314006487322.post-14748123571516914602012-03-23T14:18:26.009-07:002012-03-23T14:18:26.009-07:00I saw half of these movies, Neverending Story, Dar...I saw half of these movies, Neverending Story, Dark Crystal, Indiana Jones, and Roger Rabbit. The Gmork and the face melting scenes were the only ones that really bothered me much. Another obscure movie that stuck with me for a long time is an old animated movie called A Mouse and His Child, which is on YouTube, lots of weird dark stuff.

The one movie I really remember being scared out of my wits from was watching Gremlins. It seemed like a kids movie with all the marketing over Gizmo, but I watched it when I was about 6 years old and it scared the crap out of me for weeks.Bubbawheathttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18258094863868303774noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3565243314006487322.post-60193483235391645802012-03-19T23:44:49.795-07:002012-03-19T23:44:49.795-07:00Personally I never found "Labyrinth" to ...Personally I never found "Labyrinth" to be that bad and kind of like a less warped version of "The Dark Crystal". Don't remember the roast turkey, but I do remember the guy thinking that little demons were attacking him and ended up stabbing himself with a knife. The mummified being doused in hot wax was also pretty memorable.

Wolves of Willoughby Chase is pretty easy to find on Youtube, for anyone who hasn't freak themselves out and even thinking about that Roller scene just creeps me out, no doubt thanks to how prolonged it is.

Return to Oz is also another worthy addition, especially as most kids entered into it expecting the jolly old land of Oz, we all fondly remember from the original, only to find the munchkins heads in boxes and some creepy stop motion animation for the troll king.Elwood Joneshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09661750406352159996noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3565243314006487322.post-71162327218462878222012-03-19T10:25:32.494-07:002012-03-19T10:25:32.494-07:00The one that messed me up the most was RETURN TO O...The one that messed me up the most was RETURN TO OZ, there was something about those wheelers...and Queen Mombi...scary stuff for me as a kid.Franco Macabrohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10994905312221715861noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3565243314006487322.post-38764848148893277032012-03-19T04:32:22.300-07:002012-03-19T04:32:22.300-07:00Don't forget Return to Oz!
